Scavenging through Stony Brook

: The Tiger Lily Cafe has plenty of wraps, salads and smoothies to choose from for lunch in Port Jefferson. This photograph was taken while walking out of the restaurant, holding the camera approximately waist high. I like how it’s not framed how a proper photograph would be, but is instead slightly askew.

: Studio Art major Kasie Madden works on a windchime for class, by cutting the pieces of metal she needs. For this photograph, I tried my best to zoom in and get the sparks in focus. It proved difficult because I was wearing a protective mask like Kasie is here and couldn’t see through my viewfinder. I had to set up the shots before she began cutting, put my mask on and snap away, hoping I was getting something good.

: A couple enjoys an afternoon in the park in Port Jefferson. For this photo, I tried to get as close as possible without the couple noticing me so I didn’t change my angle too much because I wanted to stay behind them.

: Two Stony Brook University students end their day with a bus ride back to the quad. For the night photograph; I borrowed my friend’s 55mm f/1.4 lens. This created a shallow depth of field but really allowed me to get good photos in dark lighting. I chose to focus on the girl on the left since her face was turned more towards me. The leading lines in this photograph is really enjoyable.

: I was really lucky with this photograph because the girl and her friends did not have a problem with me hanging around and taking pictures of them. While I did not talk to them, they were open with me watching. For this photograph, I tried to slow down the shutter speed to blur the socks she was spinning, but I found if I did that too much the photo looked messy. So while the socks aren’t completely in focus here, I think the slight blurring really helps make the image of Peace.

: Junior Kerri-Anne Bross warms up with The Spirit of Stony Brook before the school’s football game versus Pace University. When I think red, I think SBU. And one of the best representations of SBU is the marching band.

: I had a lot of fun with the self-portrait. I like getting my picture taken, so having to take pictures of myself was not a problem. I thought having The Statesman in my self-portrait was a good way to represent myself since I have been involved with the paper since freshman year and love it. I struggled with exposure on this because the background is black and I could not figure out how to get myself and the paper in focus at the same time.

: A child cools off in the fountain at Port Jefferson. When I came upon this child, I could tell he would be a great subject for this photograph. He was just having the time of his life in this fountain, running back and forth to his mother. She had no problem with me taking pictures of her son, and he seemed to love it too. He was a little difficult to catch because of how quickly he was running around, though.

: A small, green leaf sprouts up from a mixture of orange wood chips and soil in a rectangular flower pot hanging from a tree in Stony Brook village. This photo was taken without looking through the viewfinder and pointing directly into the flower pot. I thought the color contrast was interesting.

: A festive, pumpkin spice scented candle sitting behind the cashier is the only one lit amongst hundreds of others in the Yankee Candle store in the Smith Haven mall. The photo represents hot because of the flame of the candle, as well as the color of the candle, which is a warm orange.

: A young couple sits together in the late afternoon sunshine holding hands on the Staller steps on the Stony Brook campus. This photo represents love because the couple literally couldn’t take their eyes off each other and were holding hands the entire time I was shooting the photos. They seemed genuinely happy together.

: Mid-day sunlight streams through the gaps of leaves and tree branches in the ivy trail that leads to Kelly quad on the Stony Brook campus. This photo represents peace because greenery and images of forests are usually very serene and calm. The path actually leads to a small river.

: Stony Brook University’s mascot, Wolfie, celebrates after getting a strike on the portable bowling alley set up in the SAC plaza for the event, “Gamers’ Alley.” This photo represents red because not only is Wolfie wearing all red, but red equals Stony Brook pride on campus, and Wolfie is the epitome of that pride.

: A photo of myself in the side mirror of a friends car, passing by the Smith Haven mall in Lake Grove on a sunny Wednesday morning.

: The twin fountains in the bottom floor of the Wang Center making a circular pattern in the water, while students eat and get homework done behind them. This photo is a good representation of water not only because of the obvious, but also the patterns it’s making in the water, and they way the fountains look frozen in a frame.

: The setting sun hits the tops of tall trees next to the Humanities building on the Stony Brook campus. This photo represents night because it shows the sun setting and day turning into dusk. It was dark enough where the ISO needed to be turned way up.

Photo Scavenger Hunt – I’m really much better at hide and seek than scavenging…

: I was actually trying to take a picture of this couple for love. However, I was laying down and I couldn’t quite get an angle I wanted, so I put the camera on the towel and took the picture that way instead.

: When I want something hot, I go to the Union and get myself some soup. Here’s the soup choices for Thursday.

: No one loves me more than my mother does, and since I couldn’t take a picture of her, I decided to take a picture of the phone when she made her daily phone call on Wednesday. When she called, I zoomed in really quick and took a picture before I answered.

: Andy Levanti, 20, was extremely tired of following his girlfriend around while she took pictures. I like the juxtaposition of him sleeping on the table and the student in the background who was headed to study.

: This girl just sat down and started looking out at the water. I think this is the best representation of peace because my favorite place in the world is the beach and I find nothing more peaceful than watching the waves. I was laying on my stomach on a beach towel when I took this shot.

: When I think of red, I think of Stony Brook. Is there a better way to show red than a picture of a bunch of Seawolves at a football game? I think not. To get this, I had to sit on the top of the fence at the back of the bleachers.

: I don’t like having my picture taken and, because of this, the self portrait was really hard for me. Ultimately I decided to go with this one because it’s the only one I don’t look miserable in (even if you can’t see my eyes). To get the shot, I balanced the camera on a stack of magazines that were posing as a tripod and put the camera on timer.

: I think this photo best represents water because the surfer pictured is about to go into the crashing waves. He was so impressed by their magnificence that he decided not to go in.

Photo Scavenger Hunt had me looking for “love” in a hopeless place

: Emily Perez and Daniel Arroyo, both 18, have been dating for two years. They were found walking together in a hugging position in the Smith Haven Mall on Sunday, Sept. 9, 2012. This photo represents love because the couple was only paying attention to each other. This photo shows an honest moment between them.

: This photo shows a train at the Stony Brook Long Island Rail Road station. This train arrived just after 8:00 p.m. on the night of Tuesday, Sept. 11, 2012. Passengers can be seen leaving the platform. The conductor is looking out at the platform as he leads the train out of the station.

: Two officers rang a bell in honor of the memory of every alumni and friend of Stony Brook University who perished in the 9/11 attacks. This took place during the commemoration event that was held on campus on Sept. 11, 2012. This photo represents peace because the bell was used to pay respect to all who were lost.

: Andrew Tanchoco is seen playing with a red frisbee on the Staller Steps during the afternoon of Tuesday, Sept. 11, 2012. In this photo, he is about to throw the frisbee back to his friend. This photo represents red because the red frisbee is prominent in the shot.

: This self portrait was taken in the reflection of a large mirror in a Macy’s Home Furniture store. This mirror was a large square with a smaller circle mirror built in.

Photo Scavenger Hunt – Gotta catch ‘em all

This photograph is a close up of a hot sauce stand called “the hot sauce boss”. It was also taken at the Nesconset town fair on Sunday, September 9th. I was drawn to the tent by my love for hot sauce, but quickly realized the photo opportunity.

This photograph is very peaceful. Two geese stand in the water at Lake Ronkonkoma. This photograph was taken on September 8th. I walked around the lake for a while waiting for a photo worthy moment.

This shot was also taken at Lake Ronkonkoma on September 8th. This shot was a series of three photographs. This picture was my favorite out of the series as it shows the duck in the middle of flapping its wings.

This picture was taken in the reflection of a car door. I noticed it as I was walking next to the car and liked the two different images that were visible. This photograph was taken on September 8th.

This photograph shows a therapist of the White Lotus Massage + Yoga Center of Hauppauge performing a yoga move – the forearm stand. As I approached the yoga tent the therapist was stretching. Anticipating a yoga stance I stayed put with the camera and it paid off. This shot was also taken at the Nesconset town fair.

Two volunteers at the Nesconset town fair are dressed up as Waldo and the Cat in the Hat as they hand out “I love books” bags to children. This photograph was taken on September 8th. You have to admire the Cat in the Hat it was a very hot day!

This photograph is taken through a bicycle tire at night. It was taken on September 12th. I like how the light hits the spokes and the focus. This category “night” was the hardest for me to shoot.

: This photograph was taken at the Nesconset town fair on Sunday, September 9th. The camera was hanging around my neck and I just took the shot without looking through the viewfinder. I am happy with the way it turned out. Especially the composure and varieties in colors in this picture.
